“A few things to consider when buying a used motorcycle”

Working around motorcycles everyday, it didn’t take me long to pick out my bike and now have received the handle of “Ninja Girl.” I couldn’t stop talking about the Kawasaki Ninja, my coworkers were quite proud, but I had never considered buying it used, even though there are some buyers who would. It could be because they like the idea of a fixer up or they prefer the older models. However, I want to look at a few things to consider when buying a used motorcycle:

Check fluid levels – oils, brake fluid, coolant levels, etc. Fluid levels that haven’t been maintained could mean trouble.
Tires
Chain/belt drive
Frame – signs of damage, touch up paint
Fairings – Slightly different colors could mean replacement from a crash or misaligned
Handle bars
Pegs
Electronics
Forks
Exhaust
Take it for a ride! If you’re comfortable on the motorcycle, let go of the bars and see if the bike rides straight going 20-30 mph. Also check for and excessive shaking. Check brake condition and acceleration.
Ask a lot of questions!! How long did the previous owner own it? Problems? Las oil change? Valve adjustments?

Whether you’re buying off the street or you’re buying from your local dealer, it’s a good idea to have questions ready to ask. If the sales associated can’t answer the question, they can get you in touch with the previous owner.

Now that we’ve looked that over, I guarantee if you’re buying a used motorcycle, you’ll be doing part replacements. Depending on the year of the model, you’ll be able to get some OEM parts, but you’re best bet will probably be aftermarket parts. Oil filters, tires, chains/belts, electronics, and more. 2012 Yamaha YZ250F

The 2012 Yamaha YZ250F has the most reliable engine in the 250 class and in the right hands it has the capacity to be among the fastest bikes on the National/Supercross circuit. In 2012 Yamaha continues with the Keihin FCR carburetor, producing a broader powerband and more horsepower than a EFI 250—especially when joined to a series of intelligent upgrades.

For the new year, the YZ250F Yamaha receives a 2mm large carb bore from 37mm to 39mm, for a more top-end power—especially from 8000 rpm to 12,000 rpm. Yamaha reduced the reciprocating mass of the piston and the balance of the crankshaft, reducing vibrations at the bars, pegs, and saddle. There is also a new air filter cage that flows more air to go along with the revised engine mapping and a muffler with an 8mm smaller core diameter. The piston is 8.7% lighter than it was last year. Plus, there are new piston rings with reduced friction and a lighter piston pin and circlips. The crankshaft balance and counter-balancer have been revised for a smoother performance. Additionally, the connecting rod and big-end bearing get a new heat-treating process for more strength and improved durability.

2012 YZ250F SUSPENSION:

The Kayaba Speed Sensitive System front forks have been revalved to ride higher in their stroke, to lessen diving, and the spring rate has been increased from 0.45 kg/mm to 0.46 kg/mm. The outer fork tube has been reshaped to provide a better flex characteristic. The fork offset has been changed from 25mm to 22mm and the steering stem has been increase in length. The 46 mm Kayaba SSS rear shocks have been revised damping and a 16mm shock shaft. The axle blocks at the back of the swingarm have been increased to increase the rigidity of the rear axle. Finally, the gearing gets an improved 50-tooth rear sprocket.

2012 YZ250F CHASSIS AND HANDLING

For 2012 the Yamaha YZ250F is given a new frame:

1. The new frame is made of 20 different cast, forged, machined and extruded pieces.

2. The frame rails have been changed from a double-box extrusion to a triple box extrusion for more rigidity.

3. the sections of the frame that houses the swingarm pivot have been increased in width and thickness to support the rear suspension on all axis for more precise handling.

4. The motor mounts have been changed in thickness and shape.

Lehman Trikes Set Bonneville Speed record

In the last week of August, 2011. Lehman Trikes set a land speed record on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Their rider, Bill Chambers of Upland, California, reached a top speed or 123.404 mph resulting in an official two pass average of 121.672 mph. The Lehman Trike used was unmodified Lehman Renegade with a hopped up Harley-Davidson motor built by Aces and Eights Racing in Deadwood, South Dakota.

They quickly became popular, with more than 250,000 people in the United States owning one in 1977. But once the gasoline prices began to fall and the automobile companies devised more efficient cars, the scooter’s popularity began to fade.
